Standard Petrol Rationing Card

Each square represented an amount of fuel. This was removed and handed to the attendant when putting fuel into your vehicle.

The value, in gallons, of each 'square' was given by the government at various times. If my memory serves me correctly when rationing started they were worth half a gallon each which gave a monthly ration of 3 gallons. Don't remember what value they ended up as.

A bit of guesswork, as only part of month 34 has been used I assume that rationing ended at this point. I am also assuming that this was 34 months from first starting.

It was possible to apply from extra petrol for essential use. What was allocated depended on what it was required for.

This is the front of a ration book allocating 10 gallons, for a period of about a month, to my mother who got essential use fuel because she ran a creche and collected children from various schools at the end of the school day.

This is the front of one of the essential use coupon books allocated to my father.
